seeing arabian grosbeak in upper wadi darbat
Arabian Grosbeak is one of the most coveted of all the Arabian specialities to see in Oman. It has been quite hard to find over the past 2 years.
During November 2024 a new site was discovered, away from the traditional ones of Ayn Tobruq and Ayn Hamran.
Arabian Grosbeak has been discovered at a rather remote site at Upper Wadi Darbat. It is a rather tricky drive, but with care it is ok. You will need a vehicle with high clearance once you are down in the wadi. Follow these instructions:
Start by getting to these co-ordinates: GPS 17°08'08.0"N 54°27'49.4"E From this point the tarmac road ends and you are on a steep downhill dirt track that takes you right into the wadi bottom. Drive slowly in low gear. Once at the bottom head right (south) along the rocky track, taking care to avoid any rocks protruding that may damage the underside of your vehicle.
Continue to approximately here: GPS 17°07'45.6"N 54°27'53.9"E and park your car. You may decide to park up and walk from a little earlier than this, it just depends how comfortable you are driving on such a bumpy track.
Once you've parked up, walk down the wadi to somewhere around this point: GPS 17°07'39.3"N 54°27'36.9"E It will take around 10 minutes to reach the viewing spot from where you've parked. You will have walked over some really rough, uneven terrain to view the cave above you. And you will be standing perilously close to a sheer, precipitous drop. So be careful. You should aim to arrive no later than 11am, but better to try and get here before. The grosbeak's seem to disappear around 12;30.
This is the cave you will be looking up at. If you stand with the precipice to your left, this cave will be up at your 11o'clock.
